Busy weekend at Glasgow Airports as thousands head for the sun
Thousands of Scots are taking off to the sunshine to escape the miserable May weather in what is expected to be one of the busiest weekends so far at Glasgow airport. Around 24,000 people were expected to pass through the airport over the weekend.
Many Scots are choosing this weekend to head off to sunnier climes such as Palma, Alicante and Tenerife. European city breaks are also a popular choice with some Scots heading off to enjoy a long weekend in Amsterdam and Dublin.
Mainland Spain, the Canary and Balearic islands and Portugal are the leading short-haul destinations, according to the Association of British Travel Agents. Those fed up with the May 'monsoons' are also choosing to travel to Egypt, North Africa and even as far as the US.
Prestwick Airport was also expected to be busier than usual this weekend, as were trains and buses. Across the UK more than 1.5 million people were expected to fly off, with 410,000 likely to travel from Heathrow and 250,000 from Gatwick.
