Airport and business leaders want APD axed
26.11.11
Glasgow Airport and city business leaders have slammed Westminster’s high taxes, including air passenger duty, the Evening Times reports. Businesses including airline Jet2 and Scotia Travel joined forces with the airport to call for the scrapping of taxes on air travel in a letter to Business Secretary Vince Cable MP.
They urged Mr Cable to back calls for no further increases to APD, which could be increased at twice the rate of inflation - by around 10% - in the Chancellor’s autumn statement on November 29 after it was frozen this year. Any rise will affect all flights after April 1 next year – but anyone buying tickets before April for later in the year will also be hit.
Business leaders say any tax rise will have ‘devastating consequences on jobs and businesses’. Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: ‘The UK currently has the highest rate of aviation tax in Europe and there is no indication that this will be capped or lowered to help improve our competitive position. There is no question that the ability of Scots to travel for business or leisure will suffer unless there is a fundamental review of APD.’
