Glasgow airport 25 year master plan released

26.07.05

Glasgow airport planners have released a 'master plan', which forecasts a huge increase in passengers and jobs at the airport. The plan predicts passenger numbers will rise from 8.7 million last year to 24 million by 2030, and the number of workers employed at the airport - Scotland's busiest - will rise from 5000 to 12000.

Around 125,000 landings and take-offs annually are forecast by the end of the 25-year masterplan. In order to achieve this growth, a second runway may be needed, and if a second runway is built, a new terminal might have to be built too.

The forecast predicts that, by 2030, more than half of passengers travelling through glasgow airport will fly direct to and from international destinations. In order to facilitate this, a second international pier will be built within the next 10 years, to help Glasgow cope with larger aircraft typically used on international flights.

The plan also suggests improvements to the M8 between junctions 26 and 29 to allow better vehicle access to the airport. This will allow BAA to make than the £155m it made from airport parking across its 7 airports last year.

Glasgow Airport managing director, Stephen Baxter, said of the plan: 'As we look into the future we see an airport generating hundreds of millions of pounds for the Scottish economy every year and creating thousands of new jobs. Its impact on employment, travel, tourism and the economy will be considerable.'

The plan was welcomed by the leader of Glasgow City Council Steven Purcell. 'These proposals prove that Glasgow Airport has huge ambitions and this blueprint provides a concrete foundation on which to build on. We will be working closely with the airport authorities to ensure that the expansion plans bring the dividends Glasgow, as an international gateway, so rightly deserves,' he said.

A three-month consultation exercise is now being launched on the plans. This will allow local people, politicians, business leaders and interest groups can comment.
