Airport station set for green light
23.04.08
Plans to build a train station at Glasgow Airport are to be given the green light today, the Evening Times reports. Two platforms will be created near the main terminal ahead of the £210m rail link. Four trains an hour will run between the airport and Glasgow Central once the link is completed.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport is seeking prior approval for the station to ensure the project will be completed by 2011. Renfrewshire planners have backed the plans, saying they believe the station will create a ‘sense of arrival’ for passengers. The platforms will be sited around 30ft off the ground and will be linked to a walkway leading to the main terminal.
A report before Renfrewshire Council's planning board says: ‘The station will substantially improve the visual appearance of the airport from the south. It will create a landmark within the airport campus and will importantly provide a useable transport link, vital in maintaining the viability and vitality of Glasgow Airport into the future. The site which has been chosen allows for minimal disruption in terms of the operation of the airport.’
