Staff tell aiprort 'hands off our buns !'
Glasgow Airport employees have launched a campaign to try to save their favourite low cost bakers shop at the terminal from being force to close, the Daily Record reports. Greggs the Bakers is being booted out of the airport later this year after they failed to agree a new contract, but airport workers have launched a campaign on social networking website Facebook calling on airport owners BAA to ‘get your hands off our buns' !
The staff behind the campaign have accused airport proprietor BAA of forcing out the only affordable meals outlet. One told the newspaper: ‘Staff have nowhere reasonably priced to eat. Most of the baggage handlers and ground handling staff are on minimum wage and can't afford premium prices that the remaining outlets in the airport charge. The only choices are Boots meal deals and Greggs.'
‘We suspect it is a deliberate move by BAA to force staff and passengers to pay more. Greggs wanted to expand in the airport and attract more people, but BAA like shops to improve the airport. Greggs, it appears, are too working class.’
A spokesperson for Greggs confirmed they had been served notice by Glasgow Airport to shut their shop from July 31. Greggs retail director Raymond Reynolds told the Record: ‘We loved being part of Glasgow airport. The store has traded fantastically since it opened in 2007, offering 1000's of people with great quality meals at great value prices. We have been in negotiation with the airport for the last six months in the hope of finding an alternative unit to trade from.'
A spokesman for Glasgow Airport confirmed Greggs will be leaving but declined to comment further.
