First Choice cancel Glasgow airport - Bulgaria flights
New winter ski season flights between Glasgow Airport and Bulgaria have been withdrawn due to lack of interest. The news comes just weeks before they were due to take off for the first time.
Earlier this year tour operator First Choice announced it was starting a new weekly charter flight to the Bulgarian capital of Sofia to capitalise on the country's booming reputation as a winter sports destination. A week's accommodation plus flights were to cost from as little as £400. However, due to poor holiday sales, holidaymakers have been told the flights have been cancelled.
Simon Pepperdine, head of snow sports at First Choice Holidays, said: 'Despite large-scale promotions there has been a lack of demand for our Glasgow - Sofia route.'
Several other tour operators have also been affected by the cancellation, including Inghams travel, which also operates flights to Sofia from Manchester, Gatwick and Bristol. A spokesman for Inghams said: 'All our Glasgow customers have been sent letters offering them the option of flights from Manchester to Sofia.'
Earlier this year Glasgow Airport reported a huge surge in the number of passengers flying to Bulgaria over the summer months. More than 41,000 people flew from Glasgow to the resorts of Varna and Burgas over the past 12 months.
