Councils ‘keen to take share in bid for airport’

Councils in the west of Scotland are considering teaming up with a major airport operator to buy Glasgow Airport, the Herald reports. According to the newspaper, ‘discreet negotiations’ have been held between the political leaders of local authorities and officials from Manchester Airport Group (MAG), which The Herald also revealled as a likely bidder for the airport.
The Herald reports that the leader of Glasgow City Council, Steven Purcell, and chief executive, George Black, have held talks with officials from MAG. It quotes a 'senior source' saying: ‘This is a fantastic asset that is vital to the future of this region. There is cross-party and cross-council agreement that we need to be talking to all the potential bidders. We have not ruled out taking an equity stake in the airport.’
The newspaper adds that MAG officials have not ruled out some kind of equity partnership with the Scottish public sector to buy the airport. The group, which, in addition to Manchester, owns three other regional airports in England, believes Glasgow Airport is a good ‘fit’ for its portfolio.
