Go-ahead for rail link work
21.12.08
Work to build a £130m viaduct over the M8 at Paisley for the Glasgow Airport rail link will begin in 2010, it was confirmed late last week. Seven companies will compete for the contract to construct the St James Spur, one of 4 new bridges needed for the new link. The viaduct, which will span St James Playing Fields before crossing the motorway, is the biggest piece of infrastructure for the £210m link.
The link will deliver passengers right at the airport, with a new airport station to be built south of the multi-storey car park with a moving walkway connection to the terminal. Both the new station's platforms will be built 30ft from ground level, close to the airport's Terminal 1.
During peak times four trains an hour will run between the city and airport. Each journey will take 16 minutes with one stop, at Paisley Gilmour Street. The rail link iwill be operational in early 2013, in advance of the Commonwealth Games the next year.
