Paisley University back Glasgow airport rail link
Paisley University has given its backing to the proposed Glasgow Airport rail link. The proposed new train stations and track will provide a fast, direct link between Glasgow airport and the city centre, via Paisley.
Paisley University bosses say the planned rail link would give a massive boost to their institution, and also to the surrounding area. They think it could help them attract more foreign students and academics, and also increase economic activity in Paisley.
A spokesman for the university said: 'The new rail link would bring a benefit to us, and be good news for the town. Improved access to the airport will make it even easier for students, staff and visitors to travel here from other parts of the UK and from overseas.'
The draft bill for the new rail link includes upgrading 5 miles of track between Glasgow and Paisley. More than a mile of new track will be laid between Paisley Gilmour Street and a new station at the airport.
A viaduct will take the track across St James' playing fields and the M8. If approved by the Scottish Parliament later this year, the link could be carry its first passengers by 2008.
