Huge worldwide cyber probe into airport terror attack
The investigation into the Glasgow Airport attack has become the biggest 'cyber inquiry' conducted in Scotland, and involves law enforcement agencies worldwide. According to press reports, hundreds of computers are being examined by experts around the world who are trying to find clues to the origins of the plot, with mobile and landline telephone traffic also being examined.
The airport raid on June 30 came a day after two huge unexploded car bombs were discovered in London's West End. It is believed the two incidents are linked, and the police were given a massive boost when they discovered mobile phones in both vehicles. The handsets gave them a plethora of information, names, telephone numbers and text messages, all of which helped close the net on the perpetrators.
Four men, all doctors, are now in custody and awaiting trial in connection with the attempted bombings, but the police inquiry continues. A 'source' told the Scotsman newspaper: 'This is a new dawn for Scottish police inquiries. It is by far the biggest investigation of its type that we have ever seen. We have had investigations before which have involved examination of computers in order to trace offenders, but this is just on a different scale.'
'The inquiry has gone around the world and involves law-enforcement agencies in at least half a dozen countries. There are literally thousands of files which have been examined and thousands more that still need to be checked. All of them have their own lines of inquiry and many involve having to examine and decipher computers and the information stored on them.'
Many of the computers seized have now been passed on to Scotland's hi-tech crime unit, which employs experts to examine computers. They can recover deleted files and trace who sent e-mails or accessed websites or downloaded material believed to be relevant to the inquiry.
The source added: 'There are specialists in the US, Australia and India who are all working on this inquiry. It is a round-the-clock investigation and they are constantly swapping information and updating each other.'
