More problems for Air Scotland at Edinburgh and Glasgow airport
After a weekend of delays, Air Scotland kept hundreds more holidaymakers waiting at both Edinburgh and Glasgow Airport yesterday. Two flights due to leave each of the two airports were badly affected, with delays of up to 28 hours.
All of the delays were a knock-on effect of the weekend problems for the problem-hit airline. The crisis started last Thursday when Dhia Al-Ani, Air Scotland's Iraqi-born founder, sold his stake. Ownership of the airline, which is operated by Greek registered Greece Airways, was transferred to the H-Top Hotels Group in Spain. Since then, flights between Edinburgh and Glasgow and a series of European destinations have been delayed.
Passengers on a flights due to leave from Glasgow airport to Athens at 06:40 yesterday waited more than 13 hours and travellers to Malaga faced a 12 hour delay. Flights due to depart from Edinburgh for Alicante and Paris yesterday were delayed until today, with passengers on the Paris flight suffering a 28 hour delay.
Many passengers were left to find and pay airport hotels themselves, after the airline refused to help. A spokeswoman for Edinburgh and Glasgow airport said: 'We've been bending over backwards to help out the passengers of Air Scotland, which is not our obligation at all. We have provided them with food, drink and blankets. The delays are so bad that it's hard to keep track.'
'Apparently the airline has had problems paying for fuel in other airports and there have been knock-on delays. Air Scotland only have one aircraft.'
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said that, as Air Scotland was registered in Greece, it had no remit to intervene in the matter and could only have done so if safety was at risk. Messages placed on Air Scotland's website yesterday warned all passengers travelling up until Friday to contact the airline. No one was available for comment at Air Scotland.
