MSP: Glasgow airport rail link must not be delayed
The Glasgow Airport - City Centre rail link must not be delayed, Scottish Transport Minister Tavish Scott was told yesterday. MSP Bill Butler also asked for assurances from Mr Scott over the Executive's timescale and funding of the project.
Mr Butler told the Minister the rail link was vital both to Glasgow and the west of Scotland. The Private Bill necessary to take the project forward has been prepared by Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT), which is ready to give evidence to parliament early next year.
Mr Butler said: 'I want to ensure we avoid any unnecessary delays which could threaten this important rail project. There is an opportunity to submit the Glasgow Airport Rail Link Bill early in 2006.'
'I've asked the Transport Minister for an assurance he will give his full support to the introduction of this legislation to Parliament at the earliest opportunity, and that the required funding to make the project a reality is in place. No obstacles must be allowed to get in the way of the construction of the rail link. Parliament must proceed as quickly as possible to put the legislative framework in place.'
