Labour MSPs ask for rail link to be reinstated again
16.04.10
John Swinney was challenged to use cash given by the Chancellor in last month’s budget to pay for the Glasgow Airport Rail Link this week. Paisley North MSP Wendy Alexander called the Scottish Finance Secretary to use the reinstated link to help boost jobs.
Mr Swinney scrapped the link as part of cuts finalised in the Scottish budget earlier this year, blaming lower receipts from Westminster for the decision. However, when MSPs were debating the Scottish Government economic recovery plan this week, Labour MSPs again sought to have the rail link reinstated by using £82m from London distributed to Scotland as the country’s share of extra spending in the UK budget.
Mr Swinney said the SNP lead Scottish Government could not change its decision as the extra funds were not enough to pay for a long-term development programme such as the airport rail link.
