Glasgow airport charges higher than at Gatwick and Stansted
Passengers are paying more for services at Glasgow Airport than at Gatwick and Stansted, the Glasgow Evening Times reports. A study by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) suggests customers are paying a high price for BAA's unregulated charges for check-in desks, cafes and airport car parking.
The report shows Glasgow Airport charged airlines an average of £5.09 per passenger during the last financial year. This compared to Gatwick's £4.67 and Stansted's £3.25. Heathrow topped the charts at £7.89 followed by Aberdeen at £6.55 and Edinburgh at £5.49.
The probe found BAA had cut its costs at Glasgow Airport due to increasing competition from near neighbour Prestwick. In fact, Glasgow Airport's fees have been reduced significantly since 2000/01, when the average cost was £6.22.
The OFT said it believed the current market structure 'does not deliver best value for air travellers in the UK'. It has recommended a full investigation by the Competition Commission, and is holding an 8 week consultation before it makes the referral.
