Concerns over airport roadworks

A commuter has said it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident on the flyover near Glasgow Airport, the Paisley Daily Express reports. Eryk Pietryga, who drives on the M8 every day to get to work, says drivers using the narrowed lanes on the flyover are in danger of causing an accident.
The lanes were narrowed last November as part of roadworks on the stretch of motorway, but no work has been carried out since. Mr Pietryga told the newspaper: ‘I have grave concerns about the safety of the narrow lanes on the flyover. With the lane width what it is, there are only inches to spare on either side and it is only a matter of time before there is a major accident.'
‘Bringing the speed limit down from 50 mph to 40 mph hasn't made a difference. People still speed and it only takes one driver to lose control for there to be an accident.’
Amey, the company contracted to carry out work to strengthen the White Cart Viaduct, say work is due to start in January 2009. Colin Mackenzie, unit manager for Amey, told the newspaper: 'These temporary traffic management measures are designed to reduce the load on the structure until the upgrading programme are in place. They will remain on the bridge until the strengthening works commence and are completed and are purely a precautionary measure.'
‘The reduction in lane widths has been accompanied by a reduction in the speed limit to 40mph and these measures comply with current guidelines.‘
