Scottish aviation leaders call for devolved APD
14.10.11
Air Passenger Duty (APD) is a huge drag on Scottish businesses, costing travellers millions of pounds, the Herald reports that a group of airlines, travel agents and airport operators have said. The Fair Tax on Flying alliance said Scottish business passengers paid £12.4m in APD last year and foreign business passengers flying home from Scotland £11m.
They described APD as a ‘stealth tax’ and a ‘tax on doing business in Scotland’, and have called for control of the tax to be devolved to Scotland. This would allow the Scottish parliament to reduce the tax to encourage flights and boost business. It was announced this month that APD would be reduced on long haul flight from Northern Ireland, and aviation bosses want a similar change on Scottish flights.
