Police to get £1m contribution to terror attack costs

Strathclyde Police is to get £1m to help cover the costs of the terror attack on Glasgow Airport, when a flaming Jeep was driven into the terminal building. Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said the money was to help offset the exceptional costs incurred in dealing with the attack.
Strathclyde Joint Police Board had asked for £1.7m from the government for both the terror attack bill and the cost of policing the Faslane 365 anti-nuclear protests. An initial request was turned down, but board chairman Paul Rooney wrote again - this time directly to Mr. MacAskill - and urged him to reconsider.
Mr. MacAskill said: 'In recognition of the impact that this major operation had on the force, I have agreed to provide an extra £1m as a contribution towards the additional costs incurred.' However, he again refused to provide funds for the£5.5m bill for policing the year-long Faslane 365 protests.
A government statement said the additional money was primarily for overtime and assistance from other forces. The statement makes it clear the £1m is a 'contribution' to the additional costs incurred.
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: 'We welcome this significant contribution towards the cost of policing the incident at Glasgow Airport. The funds will ensure that day-to-day policing in the Strathclyde force area remains unaffected.'
