BA Glasgow Airport passengers told to turn up as normal
BA's Scottish flights are starting to get back to normal, after this weeks unofficial 24-hour strike by baggage handlers at Heathrow. BA managers in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airport have advised passengers to turn up for travel as normal today.
BA operates more than 60 flights a week between Heathrow and Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen and a total of 300 cross-border and internal flights in Scotland. A spokesman said that passengers will be booked on alternative flights if necessary to clear the backlog.
Talks to end the dispute - which began over the treatment of catering workers - have resumed at Heathrow today. BA baggage handlers went back to work late yesterday after staging an unofficial 24-hour strike in sympathy with workers at the catering company Gate Gourmet, who had been sacked on Thursday. BA had cancelled all flights to or from the London airport until 20:00 last night.
Thousands of BA passengers travelling from Scotland to London were caught up in the dispute.
As the strike's effects rippled beyond Heathrow, BA advised those travelling from Scotland to stay at home. Around 600 BA passengers flying from the US to London spent an unscheduled night at a Glasgow airport hotel, after being told there was no room for their aircraft to land at Heathrow.
More than 300 passengers on a flight from Melbourne in Australia found themselves diverted to Prestwick. They then faced a bus journey to Heathrow or Glasgow for connections to Europe and the US.
BA's manager at Glasgow Airport, Gerry Fox, said he hoped to run a 'near normal service' at the weekend. He said: 'It has been a difficult period. At the moment, cost is not a priority for us. It is absolutely essential that we look after our passengers and that we treat them in a way in which we will hopefully regain their confidence.'
