Ryanair 'would consider Glasgow base'
13.07.11
The sale of Glasgow Airport by BAA could trigger the arrival of Ryanair, STV reports. Michael O'Leary, Ryanair's Chief Executive, said yesterday that he wants to operate flights from Glasgow to holiday destinations, as well as business routes and less typical summer destinations. Any flights from Glasgow would not affect its base at Prestwick, which would still be its main airport for the region.
BAA is expected to be forced to sell either Glasgow or Edinburgh airport along with Stansted by the Competition Commission in a ruling to be announced next week. Mr O'Leary said that Ryanair has been discussing the possibility of using Glasgow airport since the start of the year but talks may continue for another year as they are still at an earlier stage.
However, a Glasgow Airport spokesman dismissed the story. He told STV: ‘While we have held exploratory discussions with Ryanair, at no time did we receive any serious note of interest from the airline to build a base at Glasgow Airport, as they have told us they are very happy at Prestwick.’
