Taxi drivers face big cost increase

Taxi drivers at Glasgow Airport face paying almost £6000 a year - up from £1200 now - to use the its taxi rank, the Evening Times reports. In a double blow licensed drivers operating from the hub will have to pay a new £1 charge every time they leave Renfrewshire with a passenger - which could add up to £2600 a year - plus a £60 a week fee - £3120 a year - for a compulsory car radio.
The cars that use the airport's taxi rank currently pay a flat rate permit of £1200 a year, but this is being scrapped by airport operator BAA and replaced with the £1 barrier charge. In addition Inverclyde Taxis, the new firm managing the airport taxis, is to charge £60 a week for the car radio when it takes over the contract from Cabfly on March 31.
Since the terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport last June, BAA has spent £650,000 on improved drop-off and pick-up facilities and £1.5 million on the forecourt, including new security measures. A BAA spokesman told the newspaper: ‘It is entirely reasonable those companies who benefit from this investment also share in the costs. Under the new system, every driver will pay to depart through a barrier, but anyone making a journey within Renfrewshire will be refunded.’
