Edinburgh and Glasgow airport battle for Dubai flights
Edinburgh is battling its rival Glasgow Airport to secure new direct flights between Scotland and Middle East tourist hotspot Dubai. A route to the popular city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) would be a coup for ther Capital city, and is a destination it does not currently offer.
Airline Emirates is understood to be planning additional services from Scotland to the UAE from next year. The airline already has a daily flight from Glasgow Airport to Dubai, which attracts more than 160,000 travellers a year. Emirates is now believed to be choosing between an expansion of this service, or tapping into a new market from Edinburgh.
City council chiefs have already started lobbying the airline, while business leaders and airport bosses are hoping to persuade Emirates to choose the Capital. The direct flights would open up a massive tourism market, with Dubai seen as the leisure and sporting capital of the Gulf. The destination is also a major hub for worldwide travel, with many passengers stopping there before heading to the Far East or Australia.
