Rail link 'desirable not essential'

The Glasgow Airport rail link was ‘desirable but not essential’ to Scotland’s economic prosperity, Finance Secretary John Swinney told the Scottish Parliament’s Finance Committee yesterday.
Speaking at a special session of the committee, Mr Swinney said the project had been selected for the axe from a list of major projects because it was in a relatively early stage of development, so cancelling it would have the least financial impact.
He said: ‘I appreciate people are disappointed about the decision but essentially the judgment I came to was that the Glasgow Airport Rail Link was desirable but not essential to the infrastructure of the country.’
