Glasgow wants Scotland's busiest title back

Glasgow Airport is determined to get its title of Scotland's busiest airport back after being overtaken by Edinburgh for the first time last year. A total of 8.7 million passengers passed through Glasgow Airport last year - a fall of 1.1% on 2006 - whereas Edinburgh saw just over 9 million passengers - a 5% rise.
Donald Morrison, spokesman for the owner of both airports, BAA, said several factors, including the terror attack, a decline in charter flights and the global credit crisis, were to blame for Glasgow's falling passengers in 2007. He said: 'Obviously in the days after the attack a large number of flights were cancelled and we lost several thousand passengers. It was a factor but we don't think it will have a long-term effect. The other factors are more pressing.'
The airport also suffered one of its largest-ever monthly falls in passenger numbers last month, which it blamed on a drop in charter flight traffic and fears of strike action. The number of passengers using the airport fell 5% to 521,700 compared to a year ago. Passengers using Edinburgh Airport were up 3.6% in December to 622,400, and would have been higher without the threat of strike action, Mr. Morrison said.
