Man caught £75,000 worth of cocaine at Glasgow Airport
A drugs mule was caught smuggling £75,000 worth of cocaine into Glasgow Airport in a diver's vest, a court heard yesterday.
Yadir Rios's, 30, had flown into Glasgow from Cancun, Mexico, via Amsterdam and was stopped as he went through the nothing to declare channel on February 18. Glasgow High Court heard customs officers became suspicious because Mexican Rios's passport had only been issued 5 days earlier.
Kevin McCallum, prosecuting, said: 'He said he was staying in Scotland for 10 days. However, he only had £80 in sterling, 11 US dollars and 3 Mexican pesos.' The court was told a search of his suitcase found a diving suit and equipment.
Mr McCallum added: 'An X-ray examination of the diving vest showed two solid objects which Rios said were diving weights.' When they were examined they were found to contain 1½ kilos of cocaine, worth £75,000.
Judge Lady Dorrian deferred sentence on Rios, who is a prisoner at Greenock Prison, until next month for background reports.
