Old firm match boosts Glasgow Airport passenger numbers
The Old Firm derby gave Glasgow Airport a major boost in passenger numbers last month. Figures released yesterday show passengers up 1.8% to 515,958 in February, partly thanks to increasing numbers of fans travelling from outside Scotland to watch the Rangers and Celtic football match.
Rangers' Champions League run also brought big business to the airport, with the days before and after the home leg against Villarreal among the busiest days of the month. International travel rose 8.6%, with Barcelona the fastest-growing destination.
Edinburgh Airport, however, grew faster than Glasgow, partly thanks to the huge crowds flocking to Murrayfield to watch the resurgent Scottish national rugby team.
