Work on Rail Link to cause major disrution over festive period
Major engineering works for the Glasgow Airport Rail Link, plus other rail projects, will close large parts of Scotland's rail network over the festive season, causing major disruption for travellers wishing to use train services. The work will affect services in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Aberdeen and Dundee.
The work will be carried out on projects including the Airdrie to Bathgate and Stirling to Alloa to Kincardine lines in addition to the Glasgow Airport Rail Link. A spokesman for Network Rail said that it has been timed to minimise the impact on passenger services and take advantage of the holiday period.
However, several lines will be closed for days during the period, with passengers forced to take replacement buses. The planned work will includes:
- the electrification of Waverley Station's Mound tunnel between December 25 and January 4
- the redesign and renewal of track at Glasgow's Shields Junction between December 26 and January 6
- installation of new signalling systems at both Glasgow Central Station, on December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 2 and between Larbert and Stirling on January 2
- maintenance at various locations on the Edinburgh to Glasgow and Dundee to Aberdeen routes on 2 January
