Another award for Smeato
Hero Glasgow Airport baggage handler John Smeaton (affectionately known as Smeato) received a bravery award at a star-studded ceremony in New York yesterday. He was honoured by TV news channel CNN at a tribute gala for helping to thwart a terror attack at the airport in the summer, receiving the 'Everyday Superhero' award.
Mr Smeaton, 31, from Renfrewshire, wore Highland dress as he mingled with stars including Tyra Banks, Glenn Close, Harry Connick Jr and the Duchess of York at the ceremony. The event was held at the American Museum of Natural History and was followed by a two-hour gala with performances from Grammy Award winners Norah Jones, Mary J Blige and Sheryl Crow.
It is Smeato's second trip to New York this year. In September he was guest of honour at the annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony. He said in a speech at the awards ceremony yesterday: 'It was not just me that day,' naming some of the others who helped but have not received the global recognition.
As reported last month, he has recently quit his job at the airport to take up a new role as head of security at a Glasgow Airport parking company. He won't be moving too far though, the car park is around a mile from the airport.
