Topping out ceremony at SkyHub
08.04.08
Glasgow Airport has held a ceremony to mark a milestone in its 'SkyHub' extension. Staff from construction firm Balfour Beatty joined representatives from the airport and Renfrewshire Council to hold a 'topping out' ceremony, a traditional building works celebration to recognise the the project's physical structure reaching its full height.
The £30m, 4000 square metre skyhub extension is set to open in October and is expected to transform the passenger experience. There will be a new, purpose-built security search area to reduce waiting times, as well as new bars, shops, restaurants and lounges.
The airport's managing director, Gordon Dewar, smoothed the last section of concrete for the new building and led a toast to the workers. He said: ‘With SkyHub, everything is under one roof. No matter where you're travelling, once you've passed through security, you can eat, shop or relax anywhere in the terminal.’
