Which? survery finds it's cheaper to fly

Travelling by train is more expensive than flying between UK cities, research by Holiday Which? has reveled. Over 7 weeks in November and December, Which? compared the prices of plane, train and coach tickets on three long-distance journeys. On all three, going by train was the most expensive - and took much longer - with the cheapest rail tickets advertised unavailable when requested by travellers.

A study of trips from Glasgow to London by train, plane and coach found the train was consistently the most expensive way to make the journey - costing almost £40 more than the next most expensive alternative. For six of the seven weeks surveyed, the best fare available was the super advance return at £77, with a fare of £72 found in the seventh week.

The best airfare for London to Glasgow was £37.67 from Stansted with Ryanair. The cheapest one-way coach fare was £22.50. In addition to being cheaper, the average flight time was 1 hour and 22 minutes, while the rail journey took 5 hours and 20 minutes and the coach journey was 8 - 11 hours.

Which? also found the cheapest return train fare between Birmingham and Edinburgh worked out at £88.70. This is more than double the cheapest flight deal of £34.95 with bmibaby, with the flight taking 1 hour 10 minutes compared to 5 hours and 15 minutes by train.

On the journey between Manchester and Exeter the cheapest return rail fare available was £87.30, 46% more expensive than flights with the flybe airline. Taking the train took 4 hours and 19 minutes, while the flight was 1 hour and 5 minutes.

A Which? spokesman said: 'Travelling by air is obviously the quickest way to get about - even including check-in times - and extremely competitive fares are widely available. However, you'll need to factor in any extra costs - such as airport parking - and times of travel to the airport as well as considering the environmental impact of choosing air travel for relatively short journeys.'
