bmi celebrate 25 years of Heathrow flights
bmi has celebrated the 25th anniversary of the launch of its services between Glasgow Airport and Heathrow. Until October 1982, BA enjoyed a monopoly on Scotland - Heathrow air routes - among the busiest in the world. However, after initially being denied permission by the government, bmi given permission to start services between Glasgow and Heathrow using DC-9 aircraft 25 years ago. It launched flights on the Edinburgh - Heathrow route the next year.
Lesley Muir, bmi manager for Glasgow Airport, said that some things have changed in 25 years, but some have not. He said: We still offer around 8 flights a day in each direction so the timetables aren't much different. The main difference is that we also faced lots of competition, not just from BA. There are so many airlines flying to London's airports, including easyJet from Glasgow Airport and Ryanair from Prestwick, for example.'
