Doctors in court over terror attacks

06.10.07

Three doctors accused of plotting car bomb attacks at Glasgow Airport and in central London in June will stand trial in September next year, a judge said yesterday.

Jordanian Mohammed Jamil Asha, Iraqi Bilal Abdullah, and Indian Sabeel Ahmed, appeared at the Old Bailey via videolink from Belmarsh high-security prison. All three are charged with conspiring with others to cause explosions likely to endanger life or cause serious injury.

The three doctors are accused of planning an attack in Haymarket, central London, on June 29 in which two unexploded car bombs packed with gas cylinders and nails were found near the Tiger Tiger nightclub. The following day, two men crashed a flaming 4x4 Jeep Cherokee loaded with gas canisters and gasoline into security barriers at Glasgow Airport.

The bearded trio sat side by side as Mr Justice Calvert-Smith ordered that they should enter pleas to charges on January 18 next year. Karen Jones, prosecuting, told the court that the Crown wants all three defendants tried together. A 12-week trial is planned for next September at Woolwich Crown Court.

Dr. Asha, 27, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs, was arrested in a police swoop on the M6 in Cheshire on June 30. His wife, Marwa Asha, 27, who was arrested at the same time, was released without charge.

Dr. Abdullah, 28, of Halls of Residence, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley, was the passenger in the Jeep that crashed into Glasgow Airport's main terminal on June 30.

Dr. Ahmed, 26, of Liverpool, was arrested at Halton Hospital in Runcorn, Cheshire, where he worked. He is also accused of conspiring to cause explosions and possessing information that could have prevented an act of terrorism.

His brother, Kafeel Ahmed, 27, was the driver of the Jeep and suffered burns to 90% of his body during the attack on Glasgow airport. He died at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

All three defendants were remanded in custody until a hearing on December 21.
