BAA to upgrade Glasgow ahead of 2014 games

BAA will upgrade the facilities at Glasgow Airport ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Herald reports. The promise came as First Minister Alex Salmond officially opened a new security search area at the airport today.
The new search area, one of the largest of its kind in the UK and already used by 300,000 passengers since late October, is the centrepiece of a transformation already under way at the airport. The final stage of the £31m project will see former security areas turned into seating areas, fashion stores, and catering outlets.
Glasgow Airport managing director Amanda McMillan said the£ project would provide the capacity to develop the hub. She told the newspaper that BAA would continue to invest at Glasgow over the next decade, including a multi-million pound investment package to upgrade and refurbish the terminal building in advance of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Mr Salmond said: ‘The extension is particularly welcome ahead of Homecoming 2009 and the 2014 Commonwealth Games, as both events will see an increase in the number of people travelling to and from Scotland. Glasgow Airport plays a vital role not only to the Glasgow economy, but across the entire country.’
