Queen honours terror attack hero

Glasgow Airport terror attack hero John Smeaton told of the proudest moment of his life as he collected an award from the Queen yesterday. Dressed in a tartan kilt and bow tie, he said Her Majesty congratulated him for his heroics as terrorists attacked the airport last summer.
Mr Smeaton said: ‘We had a wee chat. She said, 'well done and congratulations'. It's the proudest moment of my life.’ He said it was ‘a magnificent experience’ visiting ‘Buck Palace’, adding: ‘The Queen was very nice. She asked me if it was scary that day and I said it was. She said that it was an awful thing and I agreed.'
'It was magnificent being there. What more can you say about Buck Palace? It's a magnificent experience receiving this medal. As long as I make my family proud, I'm happy.’ When asked if he was a hero, he said: ‘Hero's not a word I like. Heroes are the guys out there fighting for their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.’
Mr Smeaton was one of a number of members of the public who intervened on 30 June last year when a burning car crashed into the airport terminal, but the only one to receive a medal, although he has joined a campaign to get the others honoured too. Since the incident, he has taken a new job as head of security at an airport car park.
