Big support for 'save BA base' campaign
04.11.08
So many people tried to sign an online petition to call for the British Airways cabin crew base at Glasgow Airport to be saved that it crashed, the Evening Times reports. The website (www.saveBAscotland.co.uk), which has been restored, has already been signed by over 1300 people, including from Australia, America, Austria, France and Malta.
Almost 140 jobs are at stake from the base closure, although staff have been offered the option of commuting to their new base at Heathrow. The staff who set up the website, who cannot be named because they fear for their jobs, said they were ‘overwhelmed’ by the response after the Evening Times reported the website was up.
Unite officials, the union which represents the staff, claim the decision to close the base shows BA has no interest in Scotland and is ‘gradually pulling out of Scotland’. This is denied by the airline.
