Terror attack hero to visit Ground Zero
Hero baggage handler John Smeaton, who helped tackle the men who drove a 4x4 packed with gas canisters into Glasgow Airport, is to visit New York to pay his respects at the annual 9/11 ceremony at Ground Zero - the site of the World Trade Center. He will also travel to Washington to meet Members of Congress whilst in the US.
Mr. Smeaton shot to worldwide fame after giving an interview saying how he helped tackle one of the terrorists at Glasgow Airport on June 30. The interview was shown on news channels around the globe, a website was launched in his honour and a campaign to buy him a pint at a nearby airport hotel raised enough money to buy him 1400. [He is donating half of the funds raised to charity a war veterans charity and will use the rest to hold a party for all of those involved in stopping the attack.]
Since the attack Mr. Smeaton has been invited to No. 10 Downing Street, to an official function held by the Scottish First Minister and even appeared at the Edinburgh Festival. A TV crew even turned up to film his return to work after a brief break following the attack.
Now he has been invited to the US by the American Scottish Foundation and will travel there courtesy of Virgin Atlantic this week. While there he will attend the annual 9/11 ceremony at Ground Zero, meet Members of Congress in Washington and participate in a round of TV and newspaper interviews.
