Passengers warned not to bring weapons back from holiday
01.07.11
Passengers bringing knives and offensive weapons back to the UK in their luggage are to be targeted in a new 'zero tollerence' campaign by the UK Border Agency (UKBA). It launched scheme at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Prestwick and Inverness airports yesterday, and will work with the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS), the Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service.
UKBA staff set up a stand at Glasgow Airport yesterday to show passengers the types of prohibited weapons people have tried to bring back from holiday. ,Among the weapons confiscated last year were Samurai swords, five-bladed knuckle-dusters, flick knives, axes and taser guns. Many of the weapons are legal in countries abroad but are banned in the UK.
The UK Border Agency has vowed to take tough action to prevent weapons from reaching the streets. A spokesman said: ‘Just because you can legally buy an item while on holiday does not mean you can legally bring it into Scotland. Ignorance of the law is no defence. If you are found carrying offensive weapons then you will be stopped, the weapons will be seized and you will face prosecution.'
